Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate from Saramen Chuuk Academy a senior student must:

1. Complete all academic requirements of the school satisfactorily;

2. Settle all his/her financial obligation with school;

3. Be in good standing at the time of graduation according to the expectations of the school.

Report Cards

Report cards are issued four times a year. Semester reports are a summary of the semester's work. All greades of both quarters should be considered in the semester grade.

Report cards are issued after each quarter and parents or guardians are required to come in and pick them up. A report card will be taught only in the morning. In the afternoon, homeroom teachers will be required to distribute report cards and discuss the student's performance with parents. If a student's report card is not picked up by one week after the scheduled report card day, then that student will be sent home until the report card is picked up.

Grading

Quarter grades will be used to define those students on academic probation. Semester grades are calculated by teachers using quarter grades and will reflect academic performance, effort, improvement, and other qualities. Semester grades are used to determine passing scores for credits and will list on the permanent records and the transcripts for a student. Quater grades are not listes.
Marks, to be effective, must above all, be as just and fair as we can make them. We are using the numerical system of marking. The sagnificance of the grades is as follows:

A+ 98-100
This grade range represents "Outstanding" achievement, personal initiative, and contributions exceeding the assignment; students shows indvidual resourcefulness, a good attitude toward the class, cooperation in grup work, and individual improvement.

A 95-97
This grades range represents "superior" or unusual amout of intellectual initiative and achievement.

B+ 90-94
This grade represents "Very hood" achievement, accurate scholarship, meeting all requirements of instruction, good initiative, attitude, cooperation, and improvement.

B 85-89
This grade represents "good" achievement, carried on his/her work in a sustained intelligent manner.

C+ 80-84
This grade represents slightly above "average" achievement. For some students, this grade represents hard work, however, it demonstrates personal initiative that is uneven, an attitude that is generally neutral, and cooperation that is irregular.

C 75-79
This grade represents "average" achievement. The student does the required work.

D+ 70-74
This grade represents "below average," yet passing achievement. Student can show lack of initiative, are indifferent or poor in attitude, show little cooperation and there is hardly any noticeable improvement.

D 65-69
This grade represents "passing" achievement. The student has met the minimum requirement, but has achieved little else.

F 64 or below
This is a "Failing" score. This represents a grade for which no credit can be given. The student has not done enough work or produced enough achievement to recieve a passing grade.

I Incomplete
This mark represents that the student has not complete the necessary requirements of the course. An "incomplete" must be made up within two (2)weeks after the marking period. If not, the grade becomes a failure.
Note: An incomplete is given when a student has been absent for extended period or other circumstances that prevent a student from completing course requirement. "I" is given at the teacher's disrcretion. It is the responsibility of the teacher to change the "I" to a grade on the grade sheet and work sheet at the end of the two (2) weeks, no credit should be given and an "F" should be recorded.

NO INCOMPLETE GRADE SHOULD BE GIVEN FOR THE FOURTH QUARTER.

Grade Point Policy

All students of Saramen Chuuk Academy must maintain an overall grade point average of 65 percent in order to remain in school. Any student whose average is below 65 at the end of a school year will be asked to transfer. At the end of each quarter, any student whose quarter average is below 75 percent will be put on academic probation for the following quarter. This student must participate in the probation program designed by their homeroom teacher to help bring their average above 75 pervent. Being on academic probation does not necessarily mean that a student is failing; it only means that their average is below "C" average.

Any student who fails four (4) subjects during a school year cannot be promoted to the next grade. He or she may be readmitted the following year if he or she takes summer school to make up for the failure.

Academic Probation

A student on academic probation must attend the probation program established by the homeroom teacher. Failure to attend this program will result in conferences with the Academic Vice Principal the first time and the second time with the Principal and the parents. Finally, the student may be expelled for not participating in the probation program. Also, academic probation may carry with it a restriction from sports, but if permission is granted from the homeroom teacher, the Academic Vice Principal and the Principal, then this restriction can be removed.

Evaluation of Effort

A student's effort mark is an indication of how the student uses his God-given potential in the classroom. It is an evaluation of the students' motivation and industry in his school work. A very intelligent student who is capable of making a B+ average but is only getting a C+average will receive a poor effort grade. On the other hand, a student with a C average who is trying hard to develop his or her own ability ought to receive a good effort grade.

Saramen Chuuk Academy uses a grading scale of 1-5 to indicate the effort mark of each student. The following is an explanation of each grade:

The grade of 5: OUTSTANDING
The student shows extraordinary effort and participation in class.

The grade of 4: COMMENDABLE
Student shows excellent effort.

The grade of 3: SATISFACTORY
Student submits all of his or her assighments on time, consistently shows up for work assigned around the school, does his or her job completely; he or she is doing what is normally expected of him or her.

The grade of 2: NEEDS TO IMPROVE
Student does less than what is expected of him/her.

The grade of 1: UNSATISFACTORY
Student falls for short of what is expected of a Saramen Chuuk Student.

Evaluation of Behavior

Saramen Chuuk's goal is to develop the whole person intellectually, spiritually and socially. The evaluation of behavior focuses more on the personal growth of the student over a period of time, his or her daily interaction with other students, faculty and staff, and his or her overall effort in developing his or her God-given talents.
Saramen Chuuk evaluates students' behavior in the areas of: responsibility, concern for others, and respect and attitude.

Responsibility:
A behavior mark will indicate the student's overall motivation and industry in the classroom and during all school activities.

Concern for others:
A concern-for-others grade will indicate the student's overall concern relationship for students, faculty and staff and school.

Respect and attitude:
A respect and attitude mark will indicate the student's overall sense of honesty, respect and care.
Saramen Chuuk uses a grading scale of 5-1 to indicate the behavior mark of each student. The follwing is an explanation of each grade:

The grade of 5: OUTSTANDING
The student takes leadership roles in the classroom and accomplished all work and responsibilities assigned to him or her, and shows great care and respect for themselves, the teachers, the classmates, and the school.

The grade of 4: COMMENDABLE
Student has above average responsibility, is deeply and actively concerned, shows respect and has an excellent attitude.

The grade of 3: SATISFACTORY
Student is responsible, is concerned, shows respect and has good attitudes.

The grade of 2: NEEDS TO IMPROVE
Student is sometimes responsible, is sometimes concerned, showslittle respect and has poor attitude.

The grade of 1: UNSATISFACTORY
student is generally irresponsible, is concerned only with self, does not show espect and has a very poor attitude.

Behavioral Probation

A student identified as being on behavioral probation may not receive three grades of "1" or four grade of "2" in one semester's worth of behavior marks. If he or she recieves this many low marks or more then they will be asked to transfer.

Study

At a minimum, a student should spend two hours studying each night before a school day. Home study is not merely a writing exercise or written assignments. A student prepares for his or her classes by reviewing, reflecting, memorizing, outlining, outside reading, preparing reports, etc.

Permanent Records

When a student tansfers to another school, students records will be forwarded to the new school upon receipt of an authorized request from the new school, providing all of the student's financial obligations have been met.
Unofficial copies may be hand-carried by parents, especially by those transferring to off-island schools.

Norms for Honor Roll

In order to recognize the good performance of some students during each quarter, an Honor Roll list is posted, listing names of those students who have satisfied the following requirements.
1. An average grade of 85 with no grades below 75.

2. No 2's or 1's in effort grades.

3. No 2's or 1's in behavior grades and is not on behavioral probation.

There will be and "A" Honor Roll, which will be comprised of students with a "100-95" average and no grade below a "75". "B" Honor Roll is a "94-85" average and no grades below a "75".

In order to recognize the achievement of some students for their over-all performance at Saramen Chuuk Academy, awards are given to two qualifying students at graduation.
